Marlee Matlin Signs The Anthem At Super Bowl 50

Marlee Matlin Signs The Anthem At Super Bowl 50

VIDEO: Deaf News - Marlee Matlin was chosen to sign the national anthem at Super Bowl 50 for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin joined Lady Gaga to perform the anthem in American Sign Language at Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, USA.

Marked the third time actress Marlee Matlin performed the anthem in American sign language, having also done so before Super Bowl XVII alongside Garth Brooks and again before Super Bowl XLI alongside Billy Joel.

While Lady Gaga sang the national anthem Sunday night just prior to kickoff for Super Bowl 50, actress and activist Marlee Matlin signed the National Anthem for the crowd. But, strangely enough, she was barely shown by cameras. This is the second time that Matlin signed for the Super Bowl, which is super cool, but it just would've been nice to see more of her. Because she was, you know, signing for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people unable to hear the anthem.

Matlin appeared in the TV series ‘Switched at Birth’, but she is also well known for her role in The L Word. Matlin lost most of her hearing when she was 18 months old, according to IMDb. Matlin participates in a number of volunteer and service activities, but, most notably, she was instrumental in passing legislation that requires all televisions made in the U.S. to be equipped with Closed Caption technology for Deaf people, according to Look to the Stars.

Matlin also signed the "Star Spangled Banner" before Super Bowl XLI in Miami, which was between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, according to Hollywood Life. Often, at major sporting events, the person signing the national anthem will be shown in the corner of the screen, so that those with hearing loss can follow along easily. But that didn't happen during Super Bowl 50, and many Twitter users thought that briefly flashing Matlin while she signed was an empty gesture to include the hearing-impaired on behalf of CBS. Deaf Foam Festival “Will Be Too Noisy” UK Police:

Deaf News: Fears that three-day Deaf Festival “will be too noisy” at Eggington, United Kingdom, claims the UK police.

EGGINGTON, UK -- Police are objecting to a licence for a three-day festival likely to attract at least 500 Deaf people from across the United Kingdom because they fear the event will be too noisy.

The England Deaf Party wants The Deaf Foam Festival to take place on July 8-10 at Stockwell Farm, Leighton Road, Eggington, with entertainment running through until 4am. Despite not yet having a licence its website says certain ticket types are sold out or nearly sold out.

Beds Police licensing officer PC Liam Mitchell has told Central Beds Council that the event’s website and social media pages made reference to ‘Live Music, All Night Long’. “This is despite regulated entertainment not being requested on the application,” he said.

“Such music is likely to result in a repeat of the noise nuisance seen by the residents of Eggington during the event in 2014 [The Illusive Fest].”

He pointed out that the Illusive Fest at the same site attacted around 1,500 people, resulted in multiple arrests for drug offences, assault, criminal damage and a serious road traffic collision. Villagers from Eggington also complained of excessive noise.

Pc Mitchell said: “The previous festival at the site in question in 2014 demonstrated the impact on crime, disorder, public safety and nuisance that a well-planned event at this location generated.”

He described the planning for the Deaf Foam Festival as “worrying limited”. He added: “On speaking to the applicant via email, no public safety risk assessments appear to be in place. A review of the organiser’s website, Twitter, and Facebook pages raise further concerns about how the event is being managed... Read The Full Story.

STOKE, UK -- Stoke City star Jack Butland has generously donated £5,000 to Great Britain's women's Deaf football team, as he showed why he's one of the Premier League's nice guys.

On Thursday morning GB Deaf Football tweeted: 'Wow! Thank you so much @JackButland-One for the £5000 donation. We are in shock! Just £1890 to go.'

Butland, 22, responded: 'I've learnt a lot from major tournaments, experiences I'll never forget, I'd love for you to experience the same!'

Further support for the appeal has come from England internationals Fran Kirby, Jade Moore, Jo Potter and Lucy Bronze, along with Wales midfielder Jess Fishlock.

Butland, who has three England caps, also works as an ambassador for the Kick It Out anti-discrimination campaign.

Dubai Skyscraper Luxury Hotel Engulfed By Fire

VIDEO [CC] Breaking News: 63-story luxury hotel 'The Address Downtown Dubai' on fire near world's tallest building in New Year's Eve at Dubai.

DUBAI, UAE -- A huge fire engulfed a Dubai skyscraper on Thursday just hours before New Year's celebrations with a number of explosions heard in and around the building.

Firefighters battled a massive blaze that engulfed a luxury hotel in Dubai Thursday night while a spectacular New Year’s fireworks display lit up the night sky nearby.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Orange tentacles of flames engulfed a large section of the high-end The Address Downtown Hotel soon after the blaze began around 9:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). Hours later, dark plumes of smoke billowed from the building as the fire still appeared to be searing several stories.

Witnesses said they heard explosions as the fire raged. A source told CNN the fire broke out in a residence on the building’s 20th floor when the curtains caught on fire.

Jaqueline Hurtado, a CNN en Español correspondent, said she was at a restaurant in the area when she heard an explosion, “like a loud pop,” and thought the fireworks display may have started early.

Then she and others noticed flames at the hotel, and were soon evacuated from the area.

“That fire was big. The fire was just going so fast,” she said. “It just started burning real quick.”

At least 16 people were injured, the Dubai government’s media office said Thursday night on Twitter.

But the highly anticipated New Year’s Eve festivities in the United Arab Emirates’ most populous city including what was billed as one of the world’s largest fireworks displays went ahead as planned. Cheering crowds of onlookers watched as bursts of color filled the sky.

Just a few blocks away, the scene was dramatically different.

At the Address hotel, which describes itself as “the premier five-star hotel” in Dubai, flames appeared to be devouring growing portions of the high-rise, even as government officials said the blaze was largely contained. Source
